Thank you for agreeing to submit a letter of recommendation in support of Sample Applicant's NM Space Grant application.
This award is intended to assist high-quality community college students complete STEM studies at their home institutions and establish mentor-mentee relationships at the community college and university. One objective of this program is to encourage students to direct their careers toward science and engineering so that they become part of the pool from which NASA draws its workforce in the future.
The community college mentor (professor or instructor) is expected to meet with the student four times per semester for approximately a total of four hours. Total time commitment does not to exceed eight hours over two semesters. Contact hours with university faculty member/s count toward the total eight hours.
The role of the community college mentor is to provide the student with guidance and support, and facilitate the development of the student's academic/career interests. The mentor will also foster opportunities for the student to talk to others about her/his interests. In understanding the student's interests and sharing professional/academic experiences, the mentor will assist the student in identifying a faculty member at a university for the student to contact and discuss requirements and opportunities in that field of study.
The mentor should be able to provide the student with advice regarding coursework relevant to the student's interests, soft skills of relevance (e.g., importance of ethical behavior), and informally be able to assess progress of student toward completing degree at home institution and prospects of continuing studies at a university.
In your letter of recommendation please also include the following: Outcome anticipated as a result of student participation and likelihood of student pursuing STEM studies at a university. Mentors encourage students' academic ambitions and advise them on how to make successful transitions to other institutions of higher learning.
