Sponsor: New Mexico Space Grant
Program: New Mexico In-Service Teacher Graduate Studies Fellowship
The New Mexico Space Grant In-Service Teacher (IST) Graduate Studies Fellowship is intended for full-time in-service teachers who are taking graduate level courses to either further their pedagogical content knowledge and/or seeking a graduate degree. In-service teacher must be enrolled in an accredited university in New Mexico and be teaching in a public school in New Mexico.
Teachers must be full-time educators of any subject matter* and any grade level K-12 during the period of award. Teachers cannot have split obligations during the period of award, such as teaching part-time and completing a principalship or being an instructional specialist/coach. The New Mexico Space Grant IST Fellowship aims at supporting teachers in designing and developing two NASA science or math resource unit plans, which will be taught by the teacher in the teacher's classroom during the award period.
The resource unit plan must relate to NASA's unique mission of research and discovery as a framework for inspiration and student learning. The resource unit plan must also relate to Common Core State Standards (NM STEM Ready! Science Standards and NM Instructional Scope for Language Arts, Math and Science) applicable to the grade level. For specific requirements, please see application.
As it is true with all NMSGC programs, the participation of minorities, women, and persons with disabilities is strongly encouraged.
Space Grant IST award for in-service teachers: $2,500/semester for up to TWO semesters
*The integration level of NASA-related materials and students' level of engagement opportunities connected to NASA missions, themes or STEM Engagement programs is more important that the subject matter taught.

Integrated (Science or Math) Resource Unit Plan (5 Integrated Lessons):
Design an integrated science or math resource unit plan consisting of five lessons that introduces students (in any targeted elementary or secondary grade level) to science or math phenomena. The Resource Unit Plan must leverage the impact of NASA's advances, discoveries, and/or challenges as a source of inspiration and inquiry for students. The resource unit plan will include key science/math concepts, generalizations, and inquiry-based science/math activities appropriate for the grade level addressed. Effective learning occurs from hands-on/minds-on experiences and the unit is designed to reinforce a concept. For instance, you can address the interrelatedness of science concepts from life, earth, space, and the physical sciences. For NASA education resources see: https://www.nasa.gov/stem/foreducators/k-12/index.html
You can use any lesson plan format you would like, but each lesson must have: Learning objective(s), clear instructional processes, short description of classroom discourse and learning environment, type of NASA materials/resource to be used, and assessment of student responses. At the end of the semester you will be required to submit a unit reflection and proof that you taught the unit. See below for details and applications assessment criteria. Sufficient information must be provided by the applicant to allow the reviewer(s) to make an informed judgment.
Resource Unit Plan Assessment Criteria
Learning Objective(s): 15%
Each of the five lesson must have learning objective(s). What is the purpose of your lesson? An understanding, attitude, appreciation? A concept? A skill? Ability? State specifically what you intend to have your students achieve, present, or demonstrate. Instructional goals and objectives reflect state standards and benchmarks (and/or NGSS, CCSS for Math) and are clearly stated; learners are clear in what is expected and what is to be learned.
Instructional Processes: 20%
What teaching method(s) will most likely bring about the desired understanding, concept, skill(s), abilities, etc. Each of the five lessons are clearly sequenced and with appropriate transitions. Instructional processes are appropriate for the stated objectives. Instructional processes build upon each other and clearly support student understanding. Include a learning cycle such as a the 5Es as your instructional process for each of the lessons (see NASA 5Es description: https://nasaeclips.arc.nasa.gov/teachertoolbox/the5e)
Classroom Discourse: 15%
Teacher-talk (language tools and use) values and extends students' language, and has the potential to enhance students' intellectual, academic, emotional, and social language development. Language tools can include, but are not limited to: oral, written, visual, kinesthetic, media, and technology. Language tools and usage are clear and understandable to the students. Language and tools are used to spur inquiry and interest with the lesson that extends students' language. The unit is linguistically and multiculturally responsive to language, gender and cultural differences; and addresses the anticipated needs of diverse learners.
Classroom Learning Environment: 15%
How will you organize your classroom so that your students achieve your stipulated objective(s)? Whole class, small groups, individual, team learning, learning centers, individual centers, and group projects?
Student arrangement and classroom environment is optimized for creating meaningful learning.
NASA Materials/Resources: 20%
Each lesson within the unit must refer to NASA materials and/or research as you relate these to the concept(s) address in the lesson. What NASA materials and otherwise must students use to attain the objective(s)? Materials and resources are safe and appropriate for the task(s). Materials and resources are easily accessible to teacher and students.
Assessment of Student Responses: 15%
What procedures, tools, and/or instruments will you use to determine if your students met the learning objective(s)? Different assessments are used: diagnostic, formative and summative. Keep in mind that objectives, assessment and instruction are aligned with each other. Assessments are interrelated and appropriate to achieve the learning objectives.
Toward the end of your school semester you need to submit to NMSGC a reflection of the unit you taught. Each of the questions below can be answered in a paragraph or two.
- What do I think the students learned?
- How do I know this?
- What went well and why?
- What I would do differently and why?
- What I learned about NASA as an educational resource?
- When is this unit going to be implemented?
- U.S. Citizenship

- Major in Education
- Minimum 3.0 Cumulative GPA
- Must complete teaching of Integrated Resource Unit as specified in your application or contact NMSGC if you become ineligible and return the fellowship in full
- Must have STEM-integrated resource unit plan
- Must report academic activity supported by the fellowship at the end of your school semester. Submit a 1-page summary of how the unit went and changes you would make when teaching the unit again. Address these questions in your summary:

- Must notify NMSGC if ineligible
- Provide short-video testimonial if requested by NMSGC office
Obligation to the Government:
Students receiving support and aid under a NASA Cooperative Agreement do not incur any formal obligation to the Government of the United States. However, one
objective of this program will be served if the students who participate in this program continue to direct their careers toward science and engineering
so that they become part of the pool from which NASA draws its workforce in the future.
Certifications:
I am a citizen of the United States of America
If awarded, I agree to release my contact information to the NMSGC Alumni Association and to allow them to contact me.
If awarded, I agree to annually update the NMSGC program office of my progress from award through first employment.
The above statements are true and correct and I give my consent to allow the information provided to be reviewed by the awards panel.
