Job Description:

Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who can participate in ultrasonic measurements and data analysis activities in laboratory and field environments.  We are interested in creative individuals with excellent teamwork skills; as well as the continuing desire to learn and stay informed of the latest ultrasonic and acoustic NDE equipment and methods.  Current work includes developing acoustic methods to measure grain size and elastic moduli in metal alloys for the FAA and Aircraft Engine Manufactures, droplet size of dispersed crude oil, and developing a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to measure thickness of surface crude oil slicks in partially ice-covered water for the Department of Interior.  Our laboratory location is on the William & Mary, Virginia Institute of Marine Science Campus in Gloucester Point, VA.  
Duties and Responsibilities:
•	Support the development of novel ultrasonic measurement methods and materials characterization analysis of grain size and moduli of metal alloys, particulate size in slurries, dispersions and other properties of liquids.
•	Laboratory and field measurements and testing both indoors and outdoors onsite and at offsite locations.
•	Operate laboratory acoustic and ultrasonic NDE equipment.
•	Document results for inclusion in reports, proposals, and presentations. 
Required Qualifications:
•	College undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Applied Science, Engineering, Physics or related field.
•	Familiarity with MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
•	Ability to learn novel ultrasonic measurement methods with custom software
•	Excellent organizational skills
•	Excellent communication skills
•	Familiarity with Mathematica, Fortran, Matlab, InspectionWare or other programming language
•	US Citizen
Desired Qualifications
•	Knowledge of Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science, Physics, and Electronics
•	Knowledge of ultrasonic wave propagation and scattering
•	Experience with ultrasonic NDE measurements and instrument control
•	Proficiency in a programing language

Education Requirements:
•	Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Engineering, Applied Science, Physics or related field. 
Skills:

•	Laboratory and field acoustic measurement and documentation skills
•	Familiarity with data analysis and automation software, Mathematica, InspectionWare, C, Fortran or other programming language
•	MS Office Software
•	Excellent writing and verbal communication
