To provide an internationally benchmarked, public, residential education for approximately 1000, highly able and STEAM-interested 9th-12th grade Virginia students. 2. To create an intensive, multi-week summer residential academy for 100, highly able and STEAM-interested 6th-8th grade students. 3. To serve as an incubator/laboratory for integrated STEAM curriculum and pedagogy for students and teachers across the Commonwealth. |

Work scope The intern will: • Contribute to all aspects of the delivery and evaluation of the inaugural middle graders’ Summer STEAM camp, scheduled to launch July 2013 • Contribute to the design and planned delivery of online curriculum and applied learning modules that capture essential aspects of the Summer STEAM camp experience • Collect and synthesize relevant research that informs the Academy’s three components • Collect and synthesize relevant research to support the Academy’s four standing committees: Teaching and Learning; Fund Development; Building, Grounds, and Site Configuration; and Human Capital • Provide background information (e.g., bio sketch and research summary) on prospective knowledge experts to serve on the four standing committees • Conduct background research on other exemplary residential high school models • Investigate foundations whose missions align with the mission and purposes of the Virginia STEAM Academy • Identify potential grant opportunities and guidelines • Support proposal writing efforts • Customize background materials for the Academy’s constituents: prospective students; prospective faculty; parents and community members; legislators; college deans, presidents, and professors; business and industry executives; district superintendents; school board members; and media representatives • Organize and co-facilitate focus groups with these constituencies in Hampton Roads and throughout the Commonwealth • Contribute to the development of a grassroots multimedia campaign to spread the word about the Academy and build a broad-based network of support for the Academy • Create a database of local media contacts in the Commonwealth’s school divisions • Create a database of prospective apprenticeship partners and develop a rationale for why these leaders in scientific research, development, and application should partner with the Virginia STEAM Academy • Perform other duties as directed Qualifications The summer internship provides a platform for students to collect and apply research toward the launch of a groundbreaking, statewide, public education STEAM initiative. The ideal intern will be a college student attending a highly competitive institution and, preferably, pursuing a STEAM-related discipline. The intern will possess the following character traits: • Highly motivated • Strong oral communicator • Strong writing skills • Demonstrated capacity to collect, judge, and synthesize relevant research • Flexible • Able to take charge • Able to work independently • Able to work well and contribute to discussions with scholars and leaders • Creative • Confident • Well-versed in the media platforms used by youth and young adults (e.g., twitter, blog) • Personable – comfortable with diverse audiences • Able to prioritize tasks • Willing to travel |
