Determine the effect of beneficial plant bacteria on plant growth and motion with IALR's SMART Table. Coding using computer vision to determine the rate of growth and motion of the plants; translating data into a readable format for comparison with physical measurements; upgrading system with new cameras including multispectral images and 3D point clouds from combinations of 2D images; managing the upkeep and mechanics of the SMART Tables and the plants growing upon it.

Want to find an alternative to harmful chemical pesticide use? Internship will focus on inhibition of pathogen growth on crops, such as rice, wheat, soybean, strawberry and tobacco by bacterial endophytes. First intern will screen our bacterial endophytes against plant pathogens in vitro, then will test them in greenhouse using promising bacteria. Intern will learn how to screen antifungal producing bacteria in vitro, to inoculate plants with beneficial bacteria, and to infect plants with pathogens.

The Mechanical Engineer Intern will be responsible for various Mechanical Engineering functions within the Martinsville facility. Duties include assisting with the collection, entry, and analysis of data, printing drawings and filing them, material planning, process review, and being exposed to all mechanical equipment to include hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical processes. This position will report to the Mechanical Maintenance Manager.

Internship for computer science student/recent graduate seeking solid experience in developing mobile apps on various platforms. This position will be 20 to 40 hours per week. Student may be able to work from our office location or remotely from home.  There is also opportunity for full-time position based on student's interest and performance during this internship.

Join the IALR Research team as a crew member and learn about Unmanned Aerial Vehicle piloting and licensing. This program strives to incorporate UAV technology into farming practices and data collection techniques in southern Virginia through education, outreach and research. Duties include: following FAA Section 107 operating procedures, remote sensor calibration, image acquisition and analysis, meticulous record keeping, data logging, generating KML files, and lifting up to 40 lbs.

Software Engineer Intern is a term position for students pursuing technology degrees. This position is focused on developing, creating, and modifying general computer applications software or specialized utility programs. Interns will be expected to understand requirements and develop software solutions with support from senior staff.

The intern will contribute to the planning and implementation of the Academy’s three core functions:

1. To provide an internationally benchmarked, public, residential education for approximately 1000, highly able and STEAM-interested 9th-12th grade Virginia students.
2. To create an intensive, multi-week summer residential academy for 100, highly able and STEAM-interested 6th-8th grade students.
3.  To serve as an incubator/laboratory for integrated STEAM curriculum and pedagogy for students and teachers across the Commonwealth.

Test the feasibility of genetic information exchange such as fruit color and nutrient content between a commercial tomato cultivar and/or other vegetables and IALR’s tomato mutants using the grafting method. Tasks will include writing a research outline, conducting experiments, collecting experimental data, and performing other tasks as assigned.

We are working on a proprietary algorithm that would help predict the type of travel experience a Greenloons visitor would appeal to. Intern would help to develop and implement this algorithm.
